The INPEX Scholarship Foundation has opened its 2027 scholarship cycle, offering fully funded Master’s study opportunities in Japan for eligible students from Indonesia, Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This is not a worldwide scholarship. Applicants must hold the nationality required for one of the three participating countries and meet the academic conditions set for that country.

For 2027, the scholarship offers up to four awards per country, while Australian and UAE applicants can apply for a Master’s degree in any field of study. Indonesian applicants remain limited to STEM-related fields.

What Does the INPEX Scholarship Cover?

The scholarship provides a strong funding package designed to let selected students focus on graduate study in Japan without carrying the major costs themselves.

Successful scholars can receive:

  • full examination, admission and tuition fees;
  • round-trip airfare between their home country and Japan;
  • a monthly allowance of ¥160,000;
  • a ¥60,000 settling-in allowance after arrival; and
  • support connected with pre-departure Japanese-language preparation.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility depends on the applicant’s nationality.

Indonesian applicants must be under 30, hold Indonesian nationality, have graduated from a major Indonesian university with a GPA of at least 3.0, and come from a STEM-related faculty such as science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy or architecture. Their proposed Master’s programme in Japan must also be in a STEM field.

Australian applicants must be under 30, hold Australian nationality and have graduated from a major Australian university with at least 3.0/4.0 or 5.25/7.0 GPA. For 2027, they may pursue a Master’s degree in any field of study.

UAE applicants must be under 30, hold UAE nationality and have graduated from a major university in the UAE with at least a 3.0 GPA. They may also apply for a Master’s degree in any field of study.

The Most Important Requirement: You Need a Professor First

This is the part applicants should pay closest attention to.

The INPEX Scholarship does not work like scholarships where you apply first and sort out university admission later.

Applicants must choose their preferred Japanese graduate school or laboratory and directly contact the professor they want to work with.

At the time of application, an LOA, or Letter of Acceptance, from the accepting professor is mandatory.

That means the practical order is:

Choose a Japanese university → find a relevant professor → discuss your proposed research → obtain the LOA → submit the scholarship application.

Because the acceptance letter is compulsory, applicants should not leave supervisor contact until the final weeks.
