There are various methods for calculating the population of the world’s major cities.
Demographia, an urban public policy and demographic study website, rated the world’s greatest cities by calculating population density in urban regions rather than formal city borders or metropolitan statistical areas.
According to Alex Blei, a program scholar at New York University’s Stern Marron Institute Urban Expansion Project and a source cited in Demographia’s report, urban areas are contiguous, built-up areas that “function as an integrated economic unit, linked together by commuting flows, social and economic interactions.”
