Sri Lanka has qualified for the 2023 Asia Cup Super Fours. In a dramatic encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore today (September 5), they defended a total of 291 runs and knocked Afghanistan out of the competition.
Afghanistan had lost their first game against Bangladesh, thus a significant win in this match was required to improve their net run rate and move to the next round. Even if Sri Lanka had lost by a narrow margin, they would have made progress.
To put it simply, it was evident in the midst of the game that Afghanistan needed to chase down the goal of 292 runs in 37.1 overs (or 38.1 overs if they concluded with a six after matching the scores) to advance to the Super Fours. This meant they needed to score nearly eight runs per over.
