According to Blizzard, console ports of World of Warcraft are being considered “all the time.”
Vice president and executive producer for World of Warcraft Holly Longdale spoke with GamesRadar during BlizzCon 2023, stating that although the team is currently focused on the “three expansions” for the time being, being a member of Microsoft’s extended family means the team discusses making the game available on other platforms “all the time”.
We’re only a few months away from the twentieth anniversary of World of Warcraft, an MMORPG that has only been available on PC since its 2004 introduction.
Longdale conceded that the answer “depends on who you ask” when asked if “technical logistics or complexities that would hold World of Warcraft back from coming to console”.
To be honest, I don’t think it’s about technological problems,” Longdale remarked. “We kind of speak about it because we think we’re quite well positioned [to move it to consoles].
Longdale continued, “It’s a complicated question.” “And for a console audience, the approachability is likely going to be different.”
However, Longdale isn’t ready to declare if Blizzard’s intentions have progressed beyond just discussions.
“Right now, we’re focused on the Worldsoul Saga,” they stated. “But, dude, we’ve got enough on our plate right now. If it comes up, then we’ll review things.
“We are really thrilled about these three additions that we have. Yes, of course, but still. She laughs again and says, “We are Microsoft now. It would be very insincere to say that we’re not, like, of course we’re talking about that.”
As World of Warcraft gets ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, Blizzard has unveiled not just its next expansion, The War Within, but also the two that will follow, which will all constitute chapters in the recently disclosed Worldsoul Saga. This is exciting news for lovers of the MMO.
