The Boys are back in town for Season 4 – as we wait for the show to return next year, here’s what you need to know about the fourth chapter, including release date window, cast, plot speculation, and more.
Consider the following about popular culture in July 2019: The DCEU was still mired in the Snyder Cut scandal, Spider-Man: Far From Home left viewers on the verge of their seats with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, and Avengers: Endgame had just become the greatest superhero movie in history.
At same time, The Boys debuted its first season, ushering in a new era of grim, cynical, and graphic television that showed superheroes as egotistical, crazed madmen. Before the first episode even aired, the program was renewed for a second season, and as Amazon had predicted, it immediately became well-known across the world.
The Boys has steadily increased its fan base since its premiere, and its third season may have been its best yet. Thankfully for fans, especially after Gen V, the tale is far from over. This is all the information we currently know about The Boys Season 4, including details on the actors and the narrative.
Does The Boys Season 4 have a release date?
The Boys Season 4 will premiere on Prime Video in 2024, but we don’t have a specific release date.
There are reports that the series could release on June 13, but this is yet to be confirmed.
The release window was confirmed with the first two posters for the new season, which you can check out below:
Its renewal was first reported by Deadline on June 10, 2022, a week after Season 3 hit Prime Video. In figures shared by the platform, The Boys’ global viewership has increased 17% from Season 1, and an incredible 234% from Season 2.
“From our first conversation with Eric Kripke and the creative team about Season 3 of The Boys, we knew the show was continuing to get even bolder—an impressive feat considering the wild success of the Emmy-nominated second season,” stated Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios.
“We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and The Boys’ fight against Homelander and The Seven, as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in,” showrunner Eric Kripke continued. Furthermore, this is the first time ever that an explosion of genitalia has resulted in further success.
Karl Urban stated in an interview with Collider prior to the start of filming The Boys Season 4: “I’m getting back, getting my Butcher back on, and I can’t wait.” We work hard and have a great time playing with this group of friends. I’m excited to see where they take the characters once this season ends.
According to reports, The Boys Season 4 filming was completed in April.
Is there a trailer for The Boys Season 4?
Yes, a trailer for The Boys Season 4 dropped on December 2, 2023. Check it out below:
There has also been a fake campaign announcement that teases the upcoming plot of Season 4, which you can watch below:
In the video, Ashley Barrett, the CEO of Vought, claims that Homelander is now on trial for killing a civilian protestor at the very end of the previous season. She declares his innocence, mocking the American court system in the process, and begs viewers to tweet #HomeFree, which will surely serve as a lead-up to Season 4.
When a whole trailer is released online, we’ll update this page. For some entertainment in the meanwhile, view the Season 3 bloopers:
The Boys Season 4 cast: Who’s returning, and are there any new characters?
Remember: when it comes to The Boys and deaths, all bets are off – however, with Season 3 complete, there’s a few faces we can expect to return in the Season 4 cast, including:
- Karl Urban as Butcher
- Jack Quaid as Hughie
- Laz Alonso as MM
- Tomer Capone as Frenchie
- Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko
- Erin Moriarty as Annie January/Starlight
- Antony Starr as Homelander
- Chace Crawford as The Deep
- Dominique McElligott as Maggie Shaw/Queen Maeve
- Jessie T. Usher as A-Train
- Cameron Crovetti as Ryan
- Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett
- Claudia Doumit as Victoria Neuman
We’re also expecting Jensen Ackles to make a return as Soldier Boy. Kripke previously told Entertainment Tonight: “The old TV adage is like, never kill anyone unless you really, really have to. Never close a door, open a window. We’ll all have to wait and see, but I can’t imagine the series ending without Soldier Boy making another appearance.”
Not giving too much away, Moriarty said, “Oh my God, okay, I’m sorry, maybe this is just a good advertisement for Season 4, that I can’t answer that without maintaining composure,” in an interview with ComicBook about how Starlight is adjusting to The Boys. I’m unable to! No, that’s my sincere reply! Actually, I’m afraid to respond. She is adapting rather well.
In the Season 3 conclusion, Nathan Mitchell’s Black Noir was eliminated when Homelander tore out his insides for keeping him in the dark about Soldier Boy. Both Maeve and Soldier Boy are believed to be dead by the general population, despite the fact that Maeve lives off the grid with her boyfriend and the government has her locked up.
For Season 4, actor Cameron Crovetti, who portrays Ryan, the son of Homelander, has been promoted to series regular. Additionally, two new characters have joined the ranks: Susan Heyward’s Sister Sage and Valorie Curry’s Firecracker, neither of whom has a comic book history.
Additionally, according to Deadline, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has officially joined The Boys’ Season 4 cast as a recurrent guest performer. This means that another Winchester is joining the ensemble.
“I’m talking to Jeffrey Dean Morgan because he’s a huge fan of the show,” Kripke stated in an interview with E! News.We are in the process of devising a plan for Season 4. Although nothing is official yet, he and I are communicating via email and talking to see if we can work around his hectic schedule. Thus, pay attention to that.
Prime Video shared two photos from the upcoming season of The Boys – showing off two new characters in their full suits. Susan Heyward’s Sister Sage and Valorie Curry’s Firecracker are both rocking their very own look. As per The Boys’ official Twitter page, Sage is “already a thousand steps ahead of you,” while “Firecracker has a short fuse.”
Simon Pegg will return as Hugh Campbell Sr., after appearing in just five episodes of Season 1 before vanishing in Season 2 and re-appearing in the opener of Season 3.
He’ll be joined by Black Mirror star Rosemarie DeWitt as Hughie’s mother, a character who’s never been seen in the show so far. Supernatural’s Rob Benedict and Once Upon a Time’s Elliot Knight have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles.
And then there’s the stars of Gen V. We know Maddie Phillips and Asa Germann will reprise their roles as Cate and Sam respectively, given the events of the spinoff, but it’s unclear if we’ll see Jaz Sinclair (Marie), Chance Perdomo (Andre), Lizze Broadway (Emma), Derek Luh (Jordan), and London Thor (also Jordan).
The Boys Season 4 plot: What will it be about?
Although there’s no official synopsis at the time of writing. But Kripke previously teased what to expect the focus to be, telling Collider: “Moving forward, Ryan is a really important part of it. Both Butcher and Homelander have very good reasons to fight over Ryan, because the stakes could not be higher.
“If Ryan goes Homelander’s way and then there’s two Homelanders in the world, then that’s a nightmare for the planet. If Butcher can get Ryan into the light, then that’s probably actually the best weapon they have against Homelander. It’s always been a show about family, and so much of Season 3 was about fathers, so I think it makes sense that Season 4 is about sons.”
The teaser video we previously shared appears to indicate that Homelander will be on trial in Season 4 for killing a civilian protestor at the very end of Season 3. He is still the Captain of the Seven, though, and he could be sent go without being punished.
Starr of Homelander stated that the upcoming chapter will have even more bizarre scenes. “Somehow becomes stranger and weirder and weirder,” he stated in an interview with Variety. He also mentioned that he was filming a scene for Season 4 in which “I was staring at the guy I was opposite, and I asked, ‘What are we doing? This is unbelievable! I have so much more I could have done with my life, yet this is what I’m doing?
Recently, Pegg hinted, “You know how weird The Boys is? In an interview with Collider. It will only get stranger. On the show, I had a great time. Going back to play Hugh Sr. was so much fun. Jack [Quaid] is my love. Working with Rosemarie DeWitt, who returns as Hughie’s mother, was a pleasure. It will be fantastic. You will adore it.
I was happy to come back, and I was in probably four episodes. This staff is fantastic. They are an incredible group of folks, and that concert is a whole lot of fun!
We also know that Gen V, the spin-off of The Boys, will serve as a launching pad for future projects.
In a pre-strike interview with EW, Claudia Doumit stated, “It was great to shoot Gen V because they tee up a lot of stuff that’s going to happen in season 4 for The Boys.”
“The Boys’ fourth season will be based on a lot of the bedrock and foundations laid by Gen V. Watch it, then, since it provides you with a wealth of knowledge.
In an interview with Variety, Kripke also confirmed the timeline between Gen V and Season 4. “In our minds, it’s only a couple of days after whatever the events are of Gen V. We try to keep the timeline super simple because all that folding-in-on-itself timeline stuff that I think other comic book universes find themselves having to do is just bewildering for me as a viewer,” he explained.
“So it’s all very modular. It’s like there’s Season 3 of The Boys, and then after that Gen V takes place, and then after that The Boys Season 4 takes place. And then after that, Gen V Season 2 takes place. It’s all more like cars on a train than it is a plate of spaghetti.”
