Even though the iPhone 16 is still months away, there are a lot of leaks and speculations already. All the information you want on Apple’s next smartphone is provided here.
With a lot of new features, Apple debuted the iPhone 15 series back in September 2023. More improvements were made to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max versions than to the non-pro devices. The new A17 Pro processor and titanium turned become the iPhone 15 series’ key features.
There may be even more features available in the next generation of iPhones, the iPhone 16. Even though the official release date is still pending, leaks and speculations have given us a decent sense of what to anticipate from the next generation of iPhones.
Apple may increase the screen sizes of the Pro variants and redesign the four iPhone models. Along with improvements in display technology, the iPhones could have a new processor.
If reports about the next iPhone 16 are to be believed, it will also have better camera performance and be packed with AI technologies.
iPhone 16: Release rumors
September 2024 is when we anticipate the iPhone 16 will be released.Apple never deviates from its plan when releasing new iPhone models. On September 12, 2023, the iPhone 15 was released; on September 16, 2021, the iPhone 14 was unveiled; and on September 14, 2021, the iPhone 13 became available. Therefore, it’s quite possible that the iPhone 16 will be released in September 2024. Apple hasn’t officially disclosed the precise date, though.
iPhone 16: Price speculation
Nikkei Asia reported that the production costs for the iPhone 15 were higher than those of last year’s iPhone 14 models. However, Apple absorbed these increased costs to maintain the same prices as the iPhone 14 series. The company may pass on this price increase to consumers with the iPhone 16 lineup.
For reference, the base model of the iPhone 15 in the US starts at $799, and the iPhone 15 Plus starts at $899. The iPhone 15 Pro kicks off at $999, while the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max costs $1,199.
iPhone 16: Design & display
A leak from a reliable source suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro might sport an extremely bright display. The upcoming iPhone is said to reach a peak brightness of 1200 nits, at least 20% more than the predecessor. The iPhone 15 Pro’s display maxes out at 1000 nits.
For both SDR material and ordinary usage, the peak display is measured. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro’s display is anticipated to stay at a maximum brightness of 1600 nits for HDR video. As a result, most customers will notice an improvement in display quality, and the new OLED iPad Pro, which has a peak brightness of 1000 nits, may not always have the brightest display among Apple products.
2024 may mark significant developments for the iPhone. The “capture button” may be a new button that Apple adds to its devices. The capture button is expected to be located on the right side of the gadget, beneath the power button, as per a prior report.
However, according to a supply chain report, Apple might replace the existing physical buttons on both sides of the iPhone with capacitive versions that will offer iPhone 16 users haptic feedback.
It has been rumored that Apple shifted the mmWave antenna to the left in order to accommodate the new button. The action button on the iPhone 16 could also have solid-state technology, which was previously speculated to be present on the iPhone 15.
The standard iPhone 16 may get a redesign, maybe drawing inspiration from the iPhone X, which has vertical camera lenses like the iPhone 12. A number of leaked iPhone 16 series mockups show potential design elements for the next devices.
The Pro iPhones may get an increase in screen size, as reported by MacRumors. The iPhone 16 Pro could rock a 6.27-inch display (rounded to 6.3 inches), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max might go even bigger with a 6.85-inch display (rounded to 6.9 inches).
Apple may also use new micro-lens tech on the display for improved brightness and reduced power consumption.
iPhone 16: Camera specs speculation
The cameras on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to see no major changes. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, could see big improvements.
They could include an improved 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens, meaning improved images even in lower lighting conditions. The iPhone 16 Pro could also get a 5x telephoto lens, which is currently limited to the Pro Max model.
Rumors of a ‘super telephoto periscope camera‘ for iPhone 16 Pro Max have also been making the rounds, suggesting that the phone would boast higher zoom capabilities. Another rumor from Korea claims Apple might give iPhone 16 Pro Max a new anti-reflective optical coating technology to improve the quality of photos. The new coating will allegedly reduce artifacts like lens flare and ghosting.
iPhone 16: Specifications rumors
Although new chipsets are anticipated for all four iPhone 16 models, they won’t be the same. The A18 Pro, which is built on TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing node, is anticipated to power the iPhone 16 Pro models. It’s too soon to know what advancements it will make over the A17 Pro processor found in the iPhone 15 Pro.
The chip situation is quite confusing for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, though. The smartphones could use an A17 chip manufactured on TSMC’s inferior N3E process. This could help Apple keep the costs in check.
However, analyst Jeff Pu says the non-pro iPhones will be powered by an A18 chip with one less GPU core than the A18 Pro chip.
TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 16 Pro models will be getting new Wi-Fi 7 technology, while the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are reported to feature Wi-Fi 6E. The non-Pro iPhones may, however, receive a RAM boost to 8GB.
Apple may be swapping out all four of the iPhones’ batteries. The basic iPhone 16 may contain a 3561 mAh battery, which is an improvement above the 3349 mAh battery seen in the iPhone 15. This information comes from leaker Maijin Bu on X. The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 4441 mAh battery may be replaced with a 4676 mAh battery for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Additionally, Apple may reduce the 4383 mAh iPhone 16 Plus battery to 4006 mAh. The 4676 mAh battery unit that powers the iPhone 16 Pro may replace the 4441 mAh unit that powers the iPhone 15 Pro.
The iPhone 16 series is rumored to bring a ton of AI features. Reports suggest that Apple will supercharge Siri with Generative AI, and other AI features might also make an appearance. Apple seems determined not to lag behind the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in this regard. The new iPhones will run iOS 18, which Bloomberg reports will be one of the biggest iOS updates to date.
Is the iPhone 16 series worth waiting for?
As we previously stated, 2024 may be the year when the iPhone undergoes a transformation. If the speculations about the iPhone 16 lineup are accurate, this will be a big update. It is still anticipated that the non-Pro iPhones would only get subpar upgrades.
If you are using one of the newest iPhones, you might want to hold off and see what’s coming next. The iPhone 15 models should be taken into consideration by older iPhone owners. They have very little to lose.
