Disney announced on Monday that its popular animated film Moana will be transformed into a live-action version.
The actor who portrayed Maui in the 2016 film, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, said in a video that a new version of the film is now being created.
The procedure is still in its very early stages, he added. There is still a tonne of work to be done.
Disney describes Moana, a movie based on the cultures of the Pacific Islands, as being about “an adventurous youngster who, with aid from demigod Maui…sails off on a dangerous journey to prove herself a master wayfinder and save her people.”
Johnson, whose Samoan mother is a producer, will return to the part of Maui in the future film. Johnson’s late grandpa, High Chief Peter Maivia, served as the model for Maui.
I’m incredibly grateful and overwhelmed with humility to bring Moana’s lovely tale to the live-action big screen, he remarked. “This narrative is part of my culture, and it represents the elegance and bravery of our people.”
The eponymous character’s Hawaiian voice actor Auli’i Cravalho said Moana “has had such a significant influence on the way we view Disney princesses. Moana’s fortitude and tenacity serve as an example to viewers all across the world, to myself, and to everyone who worked on making her a reality. I’m excited to tell her narrative in a brand-new way.”
In addition, Cravalho will serve as the project’s executive producer.
