Farm Jobs in Canada 2026 — How to Apply for Farm Worker Jobs

Canadian  farms hire thousands of workers every year for planting, growing, harvesting and livestock  work, and many of those workers come from outside Canada.  Farm hiring in Canada works differently from many countries, though: everything starts with the employer. There is no farm work permit you can apply for on your own — a Canadian farm must offer you a job first, and the farm must be approved to hire a foreign worker before you can apply for your permit.

This guide explains the farm jobs available, the two official routes foreign workers use — the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) and the Agricultural Stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program — and the exact steps to apply through official channels only.

Available Job Vacancies:

Individual farms advertise their own vacancies on the Government of Canada Job Bank, and the postings change daily. The farm roles most often advertised to foreign workers include:

  • General Farm Worker
  • Harvesting Labourer
  • Greenhouse Worker
  • Fruit and Vegetable Picker
  • Livestock Farm Worker
  • Farm Equipment Operator
  • Farm Supervisor

The Two Official Routes for Foreign Farm Workers:

1. Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). This is a government-to-government programme open only to citizens of Mexico and 11 Caribbean countries: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. Workers can work for a maximum of 8 months between 1 January and 15 December, on on-farm primary agriculture. You do not apply to SAWP directly — workers are recruited and selected by their own country’s government, usually through its labour ministry, so contact that office first if you are a citizen of a participating country.

2. Agricultural Stream (Temporary Foreign Worker Program). This route is open to workers from any country. A Canadian farm employer who cannot fill the job locally applies for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Once the LMIA is approved, the employer sends you the job offer and the LMIA details, and you apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for a work permit for that specific employer. Full details of both routes are on the official Government of Canada programme pages.

Job Requirements:

  • A genuine job offer from a Canadian farm employer who is approved to hire foreign workers (with a positive LMIA where required).
  • For SAWP, citizenship of Mexico or one of the 11 participating Caribbean countries, and selection through your own government’s recruitment process.
  • Physical fitness for outdoor farm work, which involves long hours, lifting and working in all weather during the season.
  • A valid passport, and biometrics and a medical examination where your country’s application requires them.
  • Farm experience helps but many entry-level roles train new workers; honesty about your experience matters more than certificates.

Salary and Benefits:

The wage for every farm job is stated in its Job Bank posting, and employers hiring foreign workers must pay according to the programme rules for the occupation and region — always read the wage, hours and contract length in the posting itself before you accept. Under SAWP, employers must provide suitable housing and arrange transportation as set out in the programme agreement between the two governments. Never accept an offer that does not clearly state your wage, hours and duties in writing.

How To Apply:

Follow these steps in order:

  • Step 1: Search the Government of Canada Job Bank for “farm worker”, “harvesting labourer” or “greenhouse worker” and open the postings that interest you.
  • Step 2: Apply to the farm employers using the method given in each posting, with a simple CV that highlights your farm or manual work experience.
  • Step 3: If a farm selects you, the employer completes the approval process (LMIA) and sends you the job offer and approval details.
  • Step 4: Apply for your work permit through the official IRCC website — our Canada Work Permit 2026 guide explains the permit types, fees and steps.
  • Step 5: Complete biometrics and any medical examination requested, then travel when your permit is approved. SAWP citizens should start instead with their own labour ministry, as described above.

SEARCH FARM JOBS

Important: genuine Canadian employers and government programmes never charge workers a fee for a job. The only fees are the official government fees published on the Government of Canada website — never pay an agent who promises you a  farm job or a  work permit.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can workers from Pakistan or India apply for farm  jobs in Canada?
Yes, but not through SAWP, which is limited to Mexico and the participating Caribbean countries. Workers from any other country use the Agricultural Stream: a Canadian farm must offer you a job and obtain an LMIA, and then you apply for your work permit.

Can I apply for SAWP directly to a Canadian farm?
No. Under SAWP, workers are recruited and selected by their own country’s government, usually through its labour ministry or liaison service. Private agents cannot select SAWP workers.

Do I need a job offer before applying for a farm work permit?
Yes. Farm work permits in Canada are employer-driven: you need a job offer first, and your employer must be approved to hire a foreign worker before your permit application can succeed.
