Meta to Provide Facebook and Instagram Subscriptions Without Ads in Europe

The subscription services will be offered to anyone in the European Union, the European Economic Area, and Switzerland.

For a membership fee, Meta Platforms Inc. will provide ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram for users in Europe.

According to a statement released by the firm on Monday, customers will be able to subscribe to the social networking sites starting in November for €9.99 ($10.574) a month on the web or €12.99 per month via mobile operating systems from Apple Inc. and Android. Anyone living in Switzerland, the European Economic Area, or the European Union will be able to use the subscription services.

The subscriptions are a response to Europe’s tightening laws governing the collection and use of customer data. The corporation referenced a July ruling from the EU Court of Justice in a blog post outlining the decision, stating that businesses should think about providing an alternative service “if necessary for an appropriate fee.”

In these markets, Meta will keep providing ad-supported services without charging more.
