Future K-dramas are generating unprecedented amounts of anticipation. Here’s a summary of everything we currently know about Squid Game’s Season 2, including cast news and story details.

The Korean survival drama Squid Game took the globe by storm in 2021, seemingly out of nowhere. Millions of people binge-watched the episode on Netflix, and it soon surpassed all previous viewing records for the streaming behemoth.

In the years that have passed, the worldwide phenomenon has not shown any indications of abating. By imitating the program, YouTubers such as MrBeast broke records; the reality series The Challenge also generated a lot of buzz; and a video game is even in production.

But it’s the prospect of a second season that has fans really excited. Well, after endless rumors and speculation, Squid Game Season 2 is officially in the works, and it’s coming sooner than you might expect. Here’s everything we know so far:

Is there a Squid Game Season 2 release date?

Squid Game Season 2 doesn’t have an official release date – but we can expect it to land in late 2024.

Netflix confirmed Season 2’s 2024 release right out of the gate, though no exact date or even rough release window has been detailed beyond that.

According to What’s on Netflix, Squid Game was set to start filming its second season in July 2023 and continue for 10 months.

While Season 1 reportedly took Dong-hyuk 10 years to write, thankfully this season didn’t take quite as long.

When asked early on, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos did confirm the hit series would return, saying, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

Even though it was picked up for a second season, it seems like far greater ideas are in the works as well, with a ton more Squid Game stories yet to be told.

According to the Korea Times, the show’s producer said to Korean network KBS, “I’m in talks with Netflix over Season 2 as well as Season 3.” We’re going to reach a decision soon.

In June of last year, Netflix released a brief teaser video along with the phrase “Red light, green light!” to formally confirm the second season. Star Lee Jung-jae also announced in February 2023 that filming for Season 2 will start that summer.

Squid Game Season 2 cast: Who’s in it?

Lee Jung-Jae will reprise his role as Seong Gi-Hun. Furthermore, Squid Game Season 2 will include the return of Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the participant recruiter.

Indeed, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he will “try something to bring back [dead characters] in Season 2” while speaking with Deadline about the upcoming second season. Something like brief flashbacks or possible throwback episodes set before or during the initial batch of episodes might be implied by that.

“So many characters passed away, particularly well-liked ones. He apologized to Reuters, stating, “I didn’t know this was coming; I killed them so easily.” He added that he wanted to “revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died.”

However, considering how Season 1 ends, we anticipate seeing a nearly whole new cast in Season 2. The filmmaker mentioned that he would want to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in the series; however, that is probably not going to happen.

Regarding new faces, more actors in the second season—Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun—are starring in unspecified roles.

On June 29, it was also revealed that Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an would be joining the cast. Cheoul-su, Young-hee’s lover, will also be introduced in Squid Game Season 2. She is the notorious Green Light, Red Light robotic doll.

Squid Game Season 2 plot: What will it be about?

Squid Game Season 2 will follow Seong Gi-Hun.

wearing a brand-new red hairdo as he attempts to capture the people responsible for the Squid Game. The consequences of Gi-Hun’s decision to stay in Korea rather than travel to the US to be with his daughter will also be covered.

Hopefully, the follow-up will shed more light on the enigmatic games and introduce us to even more of their operators. As Season 2’s filming progresses and the first trailers are released, more information will undoubtedly become available.

Actor Lee Jung-jae stated to People, “The only thing [director Hwang] did tell me is that Seong Gi-hun is going to be in the show again, and he’s going to be playing in the arena again. I have no idea what will happen or the scale of it.”

Squid Game Season 2 trailer: Is there a trailer?

On February 1, 2024, Netflix unveiled a first look at Squid Game Season 2 with the return of Gi-hun and official images.

After the first season finale, Gi-hun is seen for the first time at an airport. He probably gets a call from Front Man, telling him that he will soon regret his choice. Gi-hun, however, cautions him that he will make every effort to locate him.

Upon initial viewing of the K-drama, it is also evident that Gi-hun has shed her red hair and is once again confronting the salesman. Actor Park Gyu-young, who starred in Sweet Home, introduces fans to a new role.

On June 17, 2023, Netflix unveiled the first teaser trailer of Squid Game’s second season. The video aired during the streaming service’s TUDUM event and featured several cast members.
