Following a request from a UK corporation, Threads could have to change its name.

A small UK software firm with the same name made the demand; thus, Meta’s rival on Twitter, Threads, could have to alter its name.

Since its July 5, 2023 launch, consumers seeking an alternative to Twitter/X have been using Threads, Meta’s Instagram-like microblogging site, which has continued to gain popularity.

It became immediately clear that Instagram had previously used the term Threads for a different kind of service, thus Meta’s new platform is not the first firm to have the moniker.

On October 30, 2023, the UK software business Threads Software Limited and its solicitors sent a letter to Meta requesting that the latter discontinue using its name in the country.

Small UK company demands Threads changes their name

Having received the trademark for the name back in 2012, Threads Software LTD requests that Meta alter their name. They share this demand in a news release and blog post on their website.

“In a letter sent today, October 30, the UK software business Threads Software Limited and its solicitors requested that Meta’s Instagram cease using the term Threads for their service within 30 days. If it doesn’t, Threads Software Limited will ask the English Courts for an injunction, the firm said in a news statement.

The business also said that, before to establishing its current website, Meta had made three further bids after making their initial offer to purchase the “Threads.app” domain back in April 2023. Additionally, according to the announcement, Threads Software Limited’s Facebook account was deleted by Meta.

It is not an easy choice for us to take on a US$150 billion enterprise. After ten years of development, we have established Threads as a recognisable brand on our platform. One of the biggest tech firms in the world is now posing a significant threat to our company,” they continued.
