Disney has officially confirmed the release of Moana 2, a surprise sequel that comes far sooner than most people anticipated. In light of the impending release of the animated sequel, here is all we currently know about it.
Even while Disney is preoccupied with projects like Star Wars and Marvel, they are still committed to making their own animated movies, building on the success of recent hits like Inside Out, Frozen, and now Moana.
We also now know that Moana 2, a live-action version of the film, is in the works and should release sooner rather than later.
When the first Moana movie debuted in theaters in 2016, it was an enormous commercial and critical hit for Disney. Does the follow-up align with that? This is what we currently know.
Moana 2 release date: When will it come out?
Moana 2 will arrive in theaters on November 27, 2024.
The exact release date of the new film on Disney+ has not yet been revealed, but we’ll be sure to keep you informed as soon as it is.
Moana 2 plot: What will the sequel be about?
The sequel will see the titular hero embarking on a new adventure to Oceania, along with Maui and a new team of explorers.
Disney has released an official summary of the film along with a brief announcement teaser, while the specifics of the next movie are still mostly unclear.
The following is the whole summary for the newest film:
According to the official synopsis, “Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.” “Moana is forced to go to the remote reaches of Oceania and into perilous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever experienced after getting an unexpected call from her navigational ancestors.
Moana 2, which is helmed by Dave Derrick Jr. and has music by three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, will hit cinemas on November 27, 2024.
Who will be in the Moana 2 cast?
Auli’i Cravalho will return to lend her vocal talents to the role of Moana once more, as will Dwayne Johnson in his role as Maui.
Johnson has spoken about his excitement for his return for the sequel, but it remains to be seen what the new movie will mean for the live-action Moana and Johnson’s apparent involvement in that.
As for the rest of the voice cast, little has been announced so far, with Cravalho and Johnson the only ones confirmed for the film. One thing we do know, though, is that Lin Manuel Miranda will not return.
Is there a Moana 2 trailer?
Disney released a very brief teaser trailer for Moana 2 in February 2024, and you can watch that right here.
This was then followed by the first full-length trailer which dropped on May 29, 2024. You can watch it for yourself below:
The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but Moana is shown to be leaving her family and travelling across the ocean. The dramatic and beautiful animation gives just a hint of what could be to come — but don’t worry, there’s still a sneak peak of everyone’s favorite demigod, Maui!
