Is there a Squid Game Season 2 release date?

There isn’t an official release date yet, but star Lee Jung-jae revealed the show will return in December 2024.

Netflix confirmed Season 2’s 2024 release immediately, though no exact date was given. Lee recently spoke with Business Insider about his role in the Star Wars series The Acolyte and revealed Squid Game “will be released in December.”

According to What’s on Netflix, Squid Game was set to start filming its second season in July 2023 and continue for 10 months, which means production should be just about complete now.

While Season 1 reportedly took Dong-hyuk 10 years to write, thankfully this season didn’t take quite as long.

When asked early on, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos did confirm the hit series would return, saying, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

Although it’s been renewed for a second outing, it appears bigger plans are in motion too. The show’s creator told Korean broadcaster KBS (via Korea Times): “I’m in talks with Netflix over Season 2 as well as Season 3.”

Lee Jung-Jae will reprise his role as Seong Gi-hun. Additionally, Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the participant recruiter will return for Squid Game Season 2.

“So many characters died, especially beloved ones. I’m sorry I killed them so easily; I didn’t know this was coming,” he told Reuters. Hwang also wants to “revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died.”

However, considering how Season 1 ends, we anticipate seeing a nearly whole new cast in Season 2. The filmmaker even indicated interest in casting Leonardo DiCaprio in the series, albeit that is probably not going to happen.
