Here is all we currently know about Toy Story 5, including potential narrative and cast hints, release date updates, and more. This might be the last goodbye to Woody, Buzz, and company.
In 1995, animation underwent a permanent transformation. Following several decades of Disney’s incredible masterpieces and DreamWorks’ gradual ascent to prominence, a brand-new company called Pixar shocked everyone.
With its computer-animated films, Pixar, still a part of Disney, helped usher in a new era of cinematic history. Their most famous work to date, Toy Story, inspired three cherished, Oscar-winning sequels.
It’s been three years since the last movie, so the question is: is there going to be a Toy Story 5?
Is Toy Story 5 happening?
Yes, Toy Story 5 has been announced by Disney!
During the company’s Q1 earnings call in 2023, CEO Bob Iger said (as per Collider): “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia.
“We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
Is there a Toy Story 5 release date?
On February 7, Disney confirmed that Toy Story 5 will release in 2026. However, there is no official release date yet.
We’ll keep this space updated with any fresh information.
Toy Story 5 cast: Who would return?
It’s expected that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen would reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz for Toy Story 5, but it’s yet to be confirmed.
In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon as part of promotion for The Santa Clauses Season 2, Allen revealed Disney had reached out to both him and Hanks for the film.
“Bob Iger, the head of Disney, said it was on; he actually said it was going to happen. They have reached out to Tom and me to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it,” he explained.
For someone like myself, it’s just because I love science fiction. Do you think that five is too much, or was four too many? The writer who is doing it allegedly authored one of the better ones and stated, “If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.” Thus, it might be a really intriguing method to put things back together.
Before Toy Story 4—which is more of an epilogue than a sequel—was released, Tim Allen declared he would be up for playing Buzz Lightyear once more.
“Once you reach number four, the trilogy [point] is over, so there’s no reason why they wouldn’t do it, for sure. Do five, if you ask me,” he said to CinemaBlend.
Having said all of this, it could not be Disney’s top concern at the moment. Pete Docter is “really looking out for the new voices and really loading up the development poo,” according to producer Mark Nielsen, who made this statement in a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter. After this one, it’s all original movies at this point.
Tom Hanks stated that he thought the series would “live forever” during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, but Toy Story 4 was the last in the series.
Since then, the studio has given us spinoffs like Lightyear, Lamp Life, and Forky Asks a Question, but they haven’t ruled out Toy Story 5.
“Every film we make, we treat it like the first and the last film we’re ever going to make,” Nielsen stated on the fourth film’s press day.
“So you force yourself to make it hold up. You don’t get in over your skis. Whether there’s another one? I don’t know. If there is, it’s tomorrow’s problem.”
