Centennial Champion is not expected to play against TCU on Thursday.

Leading the Texas Tech football team, Centennial Champion (the horse) dashes across the field carrying the Masked Rider to energize the crowd moments before Tech’s conference matchup against the University of Houston at the Jones AT&T Stadium Sept. 30, 2023.

According to a Tech press release, Texas Tech’s Centennial Champion, the Masked Rider’s counterpart, will not be present for the Red Raiders’ football game versus Texas Christian University on Thursday night.

One of Tech’s mascots, Centennial Champion, leads the football team onto the field while “Fight, Raiders, Fight” is played in an attempt to energise the fans.

Centennial Champion will not play for the second straight home game because of inflammation, a condition Tech announced on October 14 before the team’s home game against Kansas State.

Raider Red will not lead the football team out like he did during the Kansas State game; instead, it will be the Masked Rider astride a substitute horse.

According to Tech’s news release, veterinarians said Centennial Champion is expected to return to his normal pre-game duties for Tech’s home finale on Nov. 18 against the University of Central Florida.
