Although it’s said that “sex sells,” House of the Dragon Season 2 may find that fans need more than just sex to be won over.
Three things are probably going to spring to mind when you think about House of the Dragon or its parent program, Game of Thrones: dragons, lots of sex, and death.
Even if the adage “sex sells” gained popularity years ago, claims claiming that younger generations are against seeing sex on TV may have some merit. Fans of House of the Dragon have already criticized the “pointless” love scenes in Season 2.
One fan asked on Reddit, “What is the point of Alicent and Cole having sex all the time?” How does it affect the storyline? Didn’t their whole plot revolve around being virginal and moral?
“I think those sex scenes detract from those characters and seem kind of pointless, but I could understand if they were showing us that they develop feelings towards each other and maybe kiss before Rooks Rest.”
“Because they wanted a sex scene between two hot actors and that’s it,” a second person concurred. If not, they would have included some real development.
A third added, “so they can divert the audience from B&C and so they can make Team Green even more hateable.”
Fans were taken aback by a significant departure from the anticipated Blood and Cheese plot in House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 1, which Cole and Alicent’s affair was a complicit part of.
Blood and Cheese beheaded young Jaehaerys in front of Helaena when the pair was having an affair.
But for Olivia Cooke, the actor, all of this bedtime behavior marks a significant turning point for her character.
She tells Digital Spy, “She wasn’t in service to this ailing husband, and she had some sense of agency and ownership of her sexuality for the first time.” It’s compulsive, almost adolescent, and nearly feels like Alicent is going through a second puberty.
“These are all-encompassing sentiments that she has never experienced, and when Alicent feels overwhelmed, she often acts violently and lashes out. She has the bubbling quality of a stove. In my opinion, Criston is kind of there, accepting everything, and acting as a punching bag for her.
House of the Dragon Season 2 continues on Max, returning for Episode 2 on June 22.
