Sing 3: All we know so far

Here’s what’s been mentioned about Sing 3, the upcoming animated musical from Illumination that is currently in development, including possible cast members, narrative hints, and release date.

Some of the greatest animated films ever made are produced by Illumination; examples include Despicable Me and their Minions and, more recently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Sing has also been a huge hit, with the first two installments being both critically and commercially successful.

Sing, directed by Garth Jennings, made over $634 million in revenue when it debuted in 2016 thanks in part to an all-star voice cast that included Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey. With a fresh repertoire of hits in 2021, Sing 2 maintained the good times. Johansson’s performance of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll” deserves special recognition.

Chris Meledandri, the creator and CEO of Illumination, disclosed that the project is “deep into development,” so here’s everything we know so far about the feel-good film.

Is there a Sing 3 release date?

There is no release date for Sing 3. The movie was announced in April 2023.

We’ll have to wait a bit for the threequel, as there was a five-year break between the previous two films.

If Sing 3 follows the same trajectory, 2026 may see the publication of Sing 3. But because of the epidemic, Sing 2 was delayed, so we could see 3 sooner.

Sing 3 plot speculation

No plot details for Sing 3 have been revealed, though we can certainly expect more musical numbers to look forward to.

Sing 3 could see the group going on a global tour

Meledandri told Variety we’d be taken to a “new world.” Perhaps after their successful performance at The Majestic, Buster Moon decides to take the theater troupe on a global tour, with each stop presenting its own set of challenges and villains along the way.

An announcement of a renowned international singing competition may also be considered. Buster would see this as the ideal chance to present his group’s skills to a worldwide audience. However, there is intense rivalry, with artists from all around the world contending for first place. Tensions among the group increase as they get ready for the concert, trying their friendships and making them face their fears. In the end, they will have to unite to demonstrate their superiority.

Alternatively, Sing 3 could go down a completely different route, taking us to what happened to the group years after their success or seeing them embark on a time-traveling or underwater adventure.

Sing 3 cast: Who could be in it?

Illumination’s founder said Sing 3 “will involve characters from the original cast,” though an exact list isn’t confirmed.

Stars from Sing 1 and 2 will likely return. However, we don’t have an official word on who that will be, exactly.

Possible Sing 3 cast:

  • Matthew McConaughey as Buster Moon
  • Reese Witherspoon as Rosita
  • Scarlett Johansson as Ash
  • Taron Egerton as Johnny
  • Tori Kelly as Meena
  • Nick Kroll as Gunter
  • Pharrell Williams as Alfonso
  • Letitia Wright as Nooshy
  • Halsey as Porsha Crystal
  • Bono as Clay Calloway

McConaughey is down, having told CinemaBlend that he’d love to return as the koala king.

When asked why his character didn’t sing or dance in the sequel, the actor replied: “Maybe Sing 3, but it wasn’t in this one and a lot of people have been saying that and I’m like ‘That’s right, Buster Moon should sing, whistle, diddy, hum, dance, something’. Oh, that’d be super fun. That could be it. Bring it up to the director, I’m with you. You hear that Garth?”

Is there a Sing 3 trailer?

There isn’t a trailer for Sing 3. The movie is still in development, so there won’t be one until at least 2025.
