The OA Season 3: Everything we know

Tragically, The OA was canceled after just two seasons. Will there ever be a third season of the bizarre Netflix series?

The OA, which was created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, was unmatched by any Netflix series in the past or present. Regrettably, Netflix discontinued the mystery-drama in 2019 because of its hallucinogenic narrative style, which failed to attract large audiences.

Netflix firing The OA severely disappointed the ardent fan following of the program, in part because Season 2 concluded on an extreme cliffhanger. In fact, viewers are still pleading with Netflix to revive Marling and Batmanglij in order to finish what’s left of their original five-season schedule.

So, have The OA’s devotees succeeded in making a revival series a reality? Here’s what we know about The OA Season 3.

Is The OA Season 3 happening?

As of right now, Netflix is not planning to release The OA Season 3. Additionally, there is no sign that the show will be picked up by another platform.

It’s interesting to note that Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling recently disclosed that an OA movie, which would have taken the place of Seasons 3-5, was almost completed. However, the two declined Netflix’s offer to produce the movie because they didn’t think this was the proper way to wrap up The OA’s narrative.

Batmanglij told The Hollywood Reporter, “[Netflix] did try to get us to wrap it up with a movie, and we said no.” Thus, I was more perplexed than burned by [the cancellation]. Why don’t you simply conclude it with anything more than a wrap-up film, Netflix? Would you mind adding a third season to wrap it up?

We would be forced to combine the final three seasons into one and wrap things up. After that, you might delegate it to Max, Hulu, or another location. After it’s completed, you can do a lot with it.

Marling and Batmanglij both voiced optimism in the same interview that The OA Season 3 will finally air. “Twin Peaks returned after a protracted absence,” Marling noted. All we need are ideal settings and situations. Who knows, maybe dormant seeds in the desert may bloom?

Was there a The OA Season 3 plot?

Netflix never released a plot synopsis for The OA Season 3. What’s more, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij remain tight-lipped regarding their unrealized plans for the show’s remaining seasons.

Nevertheless, we might speculate as to where Season 3—which was originally titled “Part 3″—was supposed to lead Prairie Johnson and The OA. In particular, the third season would have most likely dealt with the cliffhanger conclusion from Season 2, which moves the action to a another realm where The OA is a television program.

It was an incredibly meta twist that was totally consistent with The OA’s reputation for surprising its viewers. Furthermore, the method Marling and Batmanglij planned to pay said twist off would have been even more outrageous, according to actor Jason Isaacs.

“When [Marling and Batmanglij] told me the end of Season 2, I went, ‘Wait, guys, are you actually sure?’ That sounds nuts to me. What can you possibly do afterwards?’” Isaacs told Collider in 2019. “So, they sat me down and told me, and 15 minutes later, my jaw was hanging open.”

The OA Season 3 cast – Who was going to star?

Cast members expected to return for The OA’s third season before it was cancelled included:

  • Brit Marling as Prairie Johnson/The OA/ Nina Azarova
  • Emory Cohen as Homer Roberts
  • Scott Wilson as Abel Johnson
  • Phyllis Smith as Betty “BBA” Broderick-Allen
  • Alice Krige as Nancy Johnson
  • Patrick Gibson as Steve Winchell
  • Brendan Meyer as Jesse Mills
  • Brandon Perea as Alfonso “French” Sosa
  • Ian Alexander as Buck Vu and Michelle Vu
  • Jason Isaacs as Hunter Aloysius “Hap” Percy/Dr. Percy
  • Kingsley Ben-Adir as Karim Washington
  • Will Brill as Scott Brown
  • Sharon Van Etten as Rachel DeGrasso
  • Paz Vega as Renata Duarte
  • Chloë Levine as Angie

As established by the Season 2 cliffhanger, several cast members (including Marling, Isaacs, and Gibson) would’ve portrayed fictionalized versions of themselves, as well. In a 2019 interview with Collider, Isaacs identified this as potentially the most difficult part of Season 3, had it gone ahead.

“What the hell was going to happen, how I was going to do it, and what it was,” he recalled, his brain whirling. “And then, in the last scene of The OA Season 2, it’s obviously not me.” There was a ton of amazing potential there since it was Hap inside of a Jason Isaacs version in a universe they were going to construct.

Is there a trailer for The OA Season 3?

No, Netflix never released a trailer for The OA Season 3. This is hardly surprising, as the show was axed before any footage was filmed for its third batch of episodes.
