Will there be a third season of the successful Japanese thriller and manga adaption Alice in Borderland Seasons 3?

The Japanese sci-fi drama Alice in Borderland is returning for a third season on Netflix.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has officially renewed Alice in Borderland for Season 3. Minyoung Kim — Netflix’s vice president of content in Asia Pacific — announced the renewal during a keynote talk at the APOS entertainment and media industry conference in Bali, Indonesia.

Given the show’s tremendous popularity to far and Netflix’s decision to renew it for another season, it’s hardly unexpected. When Season 2 debuted in December of last year, it surpassed even the anime titles on the site to become the most viewed title in Netflix Japan ever. Additionally, the show racked about 200 million viewing hours globally, making Netflix’s Top 10 in more than 90 countries and taking the top spot in another 17.

What is Alice in Borderland about?

The movie Alice in Borderland is based on Haro Aso’s manga of the same name. The focus of the show is on mountain climber Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) and compulsive gamer Ryhei Arisu (Kento Yamazaki). The two inexplicably end up in a dismal parallel reality version of Tokyo where they must participate in risky activities to survive.

Season 1 of the live-action show debuted on Netflix in December 2020, while Season 2 followed nearly precisely two years later. It also features Nijir Murakami, Ayaka Miyoshi, Dori Sakurada, Aya Asahina, and others in addition to Yamazaki and Tsuchiya. As co-writer and director, Shinsuke Sato is involved.

Alice in Borderland Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix. Season 3 does not yet have a release date.
