Based on Caroline Kepnes’s book series, the Netflix series You has been gaining popularity worldwide since its 2018 premiere and has continued to grow with each new season.
In addition to not being the primary killer, Season 4 Part 1 changed the course of events by revealing that Joe had a stalker of his own. But Part 2 gave the entire series a surprising new direction, and it left Joe Goldberg in an intriguing position moving forward.
Given how shockingly the fourth season concluded, how may You Season 5 develop? We know the following.
Will there be a You Season 5?
You has been renewed for Season 5 – its final outing – and it will hit Netflix in 2024.
Executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter stated that they “always conceived it as a five-season journey” when the show’s renewal was announced on March 24.
For the fifth season, Sera Gamble, the showrunner, will be leaving. “I’m incredibly grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix as I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects,” she said on Netflix.
It has been an honor and absurdly enjoyable to work with our writers, producers, directors, actors, and crew to create the show. I consider myself fortunate to have collaborated with a talented and kind artist like Penn Badgely.
“I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.”
Is there a You Season 5 release window?
As of writing, there is no exact release date for You Season 5, but its release window is expected to fall in 2024.
Despite this, we do know that the fifth and final season of You is expected to have a total of 10 episodes. However, there is also speculation that the end episodes of the season could be delayed until 2025.
We’ll be sure to keep this page updated with more information as it comes in.
You Season 5 plot: What will happen next season?
Though details have largely been kept under wraps, You Season 5 will take place in New York City – right where it all began.
Showrunner Sera Gamble had previously teased an exciting Season 5 plot, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “We have an idea for season five that we’re excited about.”
The idea that it would be good to wrap up Penn’s narrative with some sort of justice is one we discuss frequently with Penn, Greg, and the other authors. Individuals such as them seldom witness justice in the world. It’s hard to plot that. In a world where he’s been branding people in broad daylight for years, how does Joe Goldberg go down?
“Plus, he’s adorable! And he escapes punishment for it. In the writers’ room, we usually pose the more profound query, “What is real justice?” What most would harm him?
Since Joe was back in New York at the end of Season 4, everything might potentially come full circle. As Gamble stated to The Cut, “We always understood that he would be much more in the category of folks he used to observe from a distance, but that we wanted him to go back to New York, have a homecoming, have his true name, remove his beard, and look like Joe Classic. He now has practically limitless resources. Strong individuals behind him, and he feels much less conflicted about his actions in private.
A wide range of cast members, including Paco, a former neighbor of Beck’s, Ellie, who was initially supposed to return in Season 4, Marienne, and even Nadia—despite the fact that she is incarcerated—may make a cameo.
The future of You, according to Penn Badgley, will center on his rise to power and whether or not he gets justice. He said as much in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter: “I think he actually can go to a new place and, if and when it happens, it’ll probably be this spectacular resolution that everybody’s hoping it could be, because now he has further to fall.” The stakes are great, and he has power. He is no longer just a random individual.
The actor also spoke on Joe’s newest obsession Kate, saying that “she’s the last meaningful relationship he’ll be in. I don’t think there’s another one coming down the pike…Yeah, I think she’s his endgame.”
Kate seems to have accepted Joe for who he truly is, which will make for an interesting dynamic in the future of the show. We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out – if it ever does.
You Season 5 cast: Who is starring next season?
Currently, we only have two actors that we can definitely expect to return for Season 5. These actors are Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, and Charlotte Ritchie as Kate Lockwood/Galvin.
Every season, Joe is surrounded by a fresh group of people, thus the cast will probably be entirely new. However, because this is the last season, some familiar figures could potentially make an appearance.
The actress who portrays Nadia, Amy Leigh-Hickman, has already expressed a desire to return, saying, “I would love to come back and play her again,” to Digital Spy. “I don’t think there’s anything she couldn’t achieve if she can do what she accomplished in season four. I wouldn’t put anything beyond her, and I wouldn’t put anything past Joe either. Oddly enough, I believe that they share that in common.
The actress who plays Marienne, Tati Gabrielle, expressed her desire to go back to Digital Spy: “I would love to come back again.” She still doesn’t seem to have received her fair share, and I do believe that she deserves it. Man, she’s had a difficult life. All she needs is a vacation. I hope Marienne gets to see more. I only want her to be present if she isn’t involved in stopping Joe.
It was recently announced that The Handmaid’s Tale Madeline Brewer has been added to You’s final season. According to Deadline, Brewer will be playing Bronte, “an enigmatic and free-spirited playwright who comes to work for Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) at his bookstore. As the two connect over literature and loss, she stokes in him a nostalgia for his former self, causing him to question everything his life has become.”
You Season 5 trailer: Is there a trailer?
There is currently a teaser trailer for the final season, which you can watch below:
There is no new promotional footage in the teaser, but instead, we get an ominous repetition of “Hello, You” until the trailer finally says, “Goodbye, You,” in Joe’s iconic inner monologue.
