This is all the information we currently have about the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film, including the cast rumours, plot, and release date.
Ever since Alice in Wonderland debuted in 2010, Disney has been adding real action touches to some of its animation classics. The box office figures speak for themselves, even though the results have hardly, if ever, reached the pinnacles of their history.
But the primary rival of the House of Mouse has always been DreamWorks. Now, it’s attempting to follow Disney’s tried-and-true model by using How to Train Your Dragon, one of its best films.
So here’s what we know so far about the live-action adaptation, including any release, cast, and plot details.
How To Train Your Dragon live-action movie release date
June 13, 2025, is when the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon opens in theaters.
To date, the franchise has produced three films: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). In addition, there have been several live performances and three offshoot TV shows.
The Hollywood Reporter states that casting for the film has already begun and that “the feature project is already in the development process.”
March 14, 2025, was the scheduled release date; however, it has been postponed because of the current strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA.
How To Train Your Dragon live-action cast: Who’s in it?
So far, four major cast members have been confirmed:
- Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup
- Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid
- Gerard Butler as Stoick – who he voiced in the original animated films
- Nick Frost (The Cornetto Trilogy) as Gobber the Belch
It’s unclear whether Jay Baruchel, who voiced Hiccup, will return in any capacity. Other cast members in the trilogy included Jonah Hill as Snotlout, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishlegs, T.J. Miler as Tuffnut, and Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut.
We do, however, know that Dean DeBlois, the franchise’s writer-director, will return to write and direct the live-action film.
For the first time, the original filmmaker has been enlisted to give his animation predecessor a live-action makeover, in contrast to Disney’s recent spate of remakes, some of which are excellent and some of which are appalling.
DeBlois, who has never directed a live-action movie, will be assisted by producer Marc Platt, who’s worked on the likes of Legally Blonde, La La Land, and Universal’s highly-anticipated, two-part adaptation of Wicked.
